Why found Guided Compass?

Stories

Guided Compass was founded by Creighton Taylor, CFA in May 2018 for five reasons, three of which are quite personal.

First, when attending high school in south-central Los Angeles, he found that most students wanted to pursue careers in entertainment: music, movies, and sports. All other career paths seemed to take a back seat, largely because we didn’t know about them. When Creighton went on to Emory, investment management, and Harvard, he realized there was a massive number of career options that kids were unaware of, and that they would benefit exposure to.

Second, while at Harvard Business School, he saw that nearly 1/3 of classmates were career changers. And that they were overwhelmed with the number of options. These students averaged 4.5 years of work experience. If they struggled with career options, imagine what it’s like for high school students with significantly less exposure.

Third, before business school, Creighton worked at an investment management firm, where he analyzed financial data and investments. He realized that the trends and insights from investing could be used for career management, where instead of investing your money, you invest a significant amount of your time.

Fourth, in 2018, A.I. and automation began to get significant buzz. Reports show as much as 50% of jobs will disappear by 2030; and that 75% of jobs in that same year have not been created yet. When we combine this with the short job tenure of millennials, there has never been a more confusing time to be a student. There has never been a time where breadth of options has been so wide, while the benefit of specializing is so great. Students and employers need a Compass to appropriately match them during this confusing time.

Lastly, over the last few years, there has been an HR trend to hire only those with a number of years experience in that function. However, the next generation will need to gain experience somehow. There currently is not a strong solution for companies to reliably hire entry-level talent who both perform well and have strong retention. We aim to be that solution.
