ChatGPT Impact on the Future Of Education & Workforce

The ChatGPT Hype

What is ChatGPT

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI launched November 30, 2022.In January 2023, ChatGPT reached over 100 million users, making it the fastest growing consumer application to date.

Although the core function of a chatbot is to mimic a human conversationalist, ChatGPT is versatile. It can write and debug code, compose music, write movie scripts, and play games.

There are currently two major ways to use ChatGPT. The first way is to go to the Open AI website, create an account, and chat with it as if it were a person. The other way is through a 3rd party system. OpenAI allows 3rd party software platforms like Guided Compass to integrate with it so that users can chat with it through another interface. Below is a chart of how it works:

Affected Labor Markets

The accuracy of ChatGPT responses have had people concerned about it automating away certain jobs. The primary jobs discussed have included:

  • Copywriters
  • Software Developers
  • Customer Service Representatives
  • Paralegals
  • Accountants
  • Market Research Analysts
  • Financial Analysts

Competing Tech Giants

The attention ChatGPT received has led to other tech giants (e.g, Google and Amazon) launching competitor products. More competitors will likely enter the market.

Impact on Education

Wave of Bans

Because some students used ChatGPT to automatically produce academic work and plagiarize, a wave of educational institutions banned the use of ChatGPT. Educational institutions who banned or significantly limited use include Los Angeles Unified School District, Seattle Public Schools, and RV University. That said, there are many colleges and universities like State University of New York at Buffalo and Furman University that have incorporated the tool into their curriculum.

Widespread Adoption

The Walton Family Foundation released a report on ChatGPT adoption in education on March 1, 2023 here. Some highlights include:

  • 51% of teachers report using ChatGPT
  • 40% of teachers report using ChatGPT at least once a week
  • 71% of teachers agree ChatGPT will be a tool for students’ success and the workplace
  • 65% of students agree ChatGPT will be a tool for students’ success and the workplace
  • Teachers are nearly four times more likely to have allowed students to use ChatGPT (38%) than caught them using it without their permission (10%)

The Future of Education

We view ChatGPT and similar products as a positive for the future of education. Here are five ways it can assist educators:

  1. Automatic creation of lesson plans, assignments, quizzes, and more!
  2. Automatic sequential delivery of learning content in a natural chat format
  3. Automatic grading of student projects, including detecting plagiarism
  4. Automatic engagement of parents/guardians
  5. Automatic help tool as needed when students/individuals are stuck

In fact, the tool is already used by educators for these use cases. That said, because ChatGPT requires asking the right questions and identifying incorrect answers, seasoned educators report that their experience manually completing these tasks significantly helps.

Guided Compass Integration

Guided Compass has launched Compass Assistant, which is built atop ChatGPT, other machine learning technologies, and Guided Compass functionality. The integration offers a number of advantages over communicating with ChatGPT directly. Some of the advantages include the ability to import information from your profile, export information from your profile, and build a cumulative experience based on feedback. The integration is available on the web, iOS, and Android versions of Guided Compass. There are also speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities. Below we’ll walk through how Guided Compass is using its integration and how it plans to evolve the integration.

Current Integration

The current integration already provides a wide range of benefits. It not only helps educators in structured learning, but educators, workforce, and counselors can use it for unstructured, personalized advising.

Structured Learning

  1. Import automatically created lesson plans, assignments, quizzes, rubrics, etc… created by ChatGPT into Guided Compass to easily assign to students. Conversely, Guided Compass uses existing course materials to suggest prompts for requesting sequential / new course materials.
  2. Deliver prompts where students can learn sequentially in a natural chat format. Export learning for reporting purposes. Toggle on/off the ability for students to have free-form conversations.
  3. Automatically grade student writing, projects, and quizzes, including detecting plagiarism. Easily export grades from Guided Compass.
  4. The Guided Compass mentor portal can be used by parents and guardians to engage in natural conversations about their children’s progress.
  5. Toggle the availability of Compass Assistant based to allow students to request assistance at appropriate times. Route students to educators and technical support in one interface.

Guided Compass has launched six initial courses delivered primarily through Compass Assistant: career exploration, career planning, financial planning, career preparation, career training, and entrepreneurship. The below clip demonstrates how this works (i.e., auto-delivery):

Some promising use cases include walking students through exploring careers, setting SMART goals, creating a resume, creating a cover letter, creating a portfolio, conducting a mock interview, completing a mock internship, evaluating business ideas, and creating a business plan.

Unstructured, Personalized Advising

Guided Compass is also integrated with ChatGPT for general advising:

  • Students / career-seekers can click pre-structured prompts around strategies and tactics to achieve their SMART goal(s).
  • Students / career-seekers can click pre-structured prompts related to their interest, personality, values, work preference, and skill self-assessments.
  • Students / career-seekers can click pre-structured prompts based upon what others think their top skills are.
  • Students / career-seekers can click pre-structured prompts to assist with upcoming career events, projects, and work opportunities.

Future Plans

In the future, we intend to build all Guided Compass functionality into Compass Assistant. This means all career-related tasks can be directed through a chat interface. Imagine a career jarvis.
